Ten Green Bottles Powys CIC. WELCOME TO TEN GREEN BOTTLES! O2 It’s Your Community Awards recognises local project POWYS’ TEN GREEN BOTTLES receives £999
New Radnor’s Ten Green Bottles is the latest project in Powys to receive money from O2’s It’s Your Community programme. This social enterprise has been awarded £999 in the awards Cultural category, which was set up to provide communities with cash awards to drive small changes that can make a big difference. On Friday 287th November 2008, Jenny Northwood O2’s branch Manager for Hereford and MP Roger Williams attended an open day at Ten Green Bottles to try out flame working using the newly purchased equipment.

Ten Green Bottles was set up as a social enterprise a year ago to research and develop ways of recycling glass and at the same time offer work and training to people with learning disabilities. So far they have worked with over 270 people with a range of disabilities and developed over 30 products. As there is a demand for people with learning disabilities to thread and make jewellery, Ten Green Bottles wanted to make their own beads and turn them into jewellery. They even found a glass bead maker to teach them this skill. All that was needed was the equipment to make the beads and this is what their Its Your Community award has provided – in the form of a lamp working station.
Lorraine Powers, Managing Director of Ten Green Bottles said, “The equipment purchased from the O2 grant will mean so much to our organisation. It will allow us to offer a whole new range of recycled glass jewellery. It will also enable us to offer activities to a wider range of volunteers, such as sorting beads, threading, and assembling and boxing jewelry. The UK currently has one of the lowest glass recycling rates in Europe, currently standing at 50%. Pubs, clubs and restaurants throw away over half a million tones of glass bottles each year of which no more than 10% gets separated for glass recycling (source: British Glass). Ten Green Bottles demonstrates how versatile waste glass is and how it can be transformed into everyday items – from plates and bowls to stained glass works of art, and now jewellery. We can’t wait to get started.”
“This is a fantastic project and I’m delighted It’s Your Community has been able to get involved,’ says O2’s Jenny Northwood. ‘Ten Green Bottles is a really dynamic organisation, and a real success story. The It’s Your Community ‘Culture’ category was created to benefit projects just like Ten Green Bottles and helps to ensure people continue to have access to educational resources, equipment and materials.” She goes on to explain that “O2’s It’s Your Community exists to inspire people to apply for cash awards to drive small community changes that can collectively make a big difference.”
